This year the Special Education Legislative Summit (SELS), which is usually held in Washington D.C., will be held virtually from July 13 to 23. It is sponsored and planned by the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) and the Council of Administrators of Special Education (CASE). It is an opportunity for special educators from across the country to make a difference by advocating for their students with their members of Congress. Attendance at SELS is free and although membership in CEC is encouraged it is not required.
It is a fabulous event in which SELS participants will (a) participate in Town Hall-style events where you will learn from and ask questions of policy experts and Capitol Hill veterans; (b) get news and updated information from SELS Team Leaders and experts from the field about the key issues impacting special educators across the country including legislation, appropriations, mental health, educator shortages, and more; and (c) Learn from people who have done this work before about how to sharpen the message you bring to Members of Congress to advocate for infants, toddlers, children, and youth with exceptionalities.
Virtual SELS will give you the support you need and many ways “to meet” with a Member to make a difference. For more information on the SELS schedule click here, and for more information on the SELS issues briefs, click here.
